Welcome to our FAQ section! Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions about our topical hair loss treatments.
Finasteride and Minoxidil work through two entirely different, complementary mechanisms to combat hair loss, making their combination highly effective. Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that works to reduce the levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp, which is the primary hormone responsible for shrinking hair follicles in male pattern baldness. Minoxidil is a vasodilator that helps stimulate hair growth by improving blood flow to the hair follicles, providing them with more oxygen and nutrients, and extending the hair growth (anagen) phase. Using them together tackles the problem from both the hormonal root cause and the growth stimulation side.
Topical formulations are designed to deliver the active ingredients directly to the scalp, the area that needs treatment. For Finasteride specifically, topical application aims to reduce DHT levels locally in the scalp with potentially less systemic (body-wide) absorption compared to the oral pill. This reduced systemic exposure is thought to lower the risk of systemic side effects, such as sexual side effects, which are sometimes associated with oral Finasteride.
Application methods can vary slightly based on the specific product (solution, foam, or gel), but the general process involves the following steps:
The required frequency depends on your specific concentration but most topical Minoxidil/Finasteride combinations are intended for once or twice-daily use. Consistency is the single most important factor for success. Missing an occasional dose is fine, but if you miss a dose, just resume your regular schedule; do not double the dose.
You should wait for the topical product to fully dry (typically 2-4 hours) before applying styling gels, mousses, or hairsprays. Using a hairdryer immediately after application is not recommended as it may make the treatment less effective by evaporating the active ingredients too quickly.
Patience and consistency are vital. Visible results typically take time because the hair growth cycle is slow:
Finasteride and Minoxidil are treatments, not cures, for pattern hair loss. If you stop using the medication, any hair gained or maintained will likely be lost, and hair loss will resume within a few months. Consistent, long-term use is necessary to maintain results.
Since this is a topical treatment, the most common side effects are localized to the scalp and may include:
While the risk of systemic side effects is lower than with oral Finasteride, it is not zero. Finasteride is absorbed into the bloodstream in trace amounts. Potential systemic side effects can include sexual dysfunction, decreased libido, or mood changes, but these are rare with topical use. If you experience any concerning side effects, stop using the product and consult your healthcare provider immediately.
